In recent weeks, I have received many emails inquiring about CrossFit and whether it is right for them. They ask are they too old/young, they are out of shape, too weak, etc…. And the simple answer that I will give anyone is YES! CrossFit can be modified to fit all populations, whether it is by removing the weight, lowering the height, etc.

CrossFit is defined as “Constantly varied high intensity functional movements”-CrossFit.com.

What does this mean? It states that each daily workout will always be different from day to day. They will be at a high intensity and will be functional. What is a Functional Movement you might ask? It is anything that you do on a daily basis, such as sitting and standing, getting up from bed, picking something up from the ground, going up stairs. You get the idea! In many ways, CrossFit is the way of making your life easier to live.

My challenge for anyone who is up to it:  Sit and stand in whatever chair/couch they are sitting in today 40 times in a row without using your hands to help in the movement. Tell me what you think right after and the next day.  Is it tough? Were your sore?

Well you just completed your first functional movement exercise! It’s as easy as that!

CrossFit is the sport of Fitness which is increased work capacity across broad time & modal domains. So tell me, do you still question whether CrossFit is right for you?

Due to unforeseen circumstances it seems that construction is backed up longer than expected. So the Opening date has been pushed back to mid September, but no worries. This just means you get a couple more weekends to work on your mobility and increase your bodies efficiency. Here is another great mobility video to get you to think about what your day of sitting does to your body. Enjoy!

This past weekend I was lucky enough to be a part of the 2012 USA Triathlon Age Group National Championship in Burlington Vermont where over 3,000 different Triathletes competed to try and stake their claim as one of the best. This year I had one solid goal… have fun and leave nothing left in the tank!

With preparing BIO for opening and fitting in my Triathlon training in as much as I could, I came into the race the most relaxed I had ever been. While waiting for my wave to start I felt like it was just another day in paradise, and it showed. During the swim, bike and run I had a positive attitude throughout, and the thing that helped the most was setting minor goals. Setting goals for yourself is the single MOST important thing you can do to help you move forward in life and fitness. But what people do not understand is that its the short term/immediate goals that make the biggest difference. An example I have used with past clients is when you teach a child to walk you first have to teach them to roll over, otherwise the child will think whatever he/she is doing is never enough and will give up.

My short term goal was to enjoy the 40k bike ride while still holding a above average pace (Check), descend my 10k run after (CHECK!) and finish the race with nothing left in the tank (Triple CHECK!), I finished with a 4 min PR and couldn’t have been happier. Setting yourself up for success is the first step in reaching your goal. Like the pyramids they were built from the ground up, so pick many immediate goals which are easily achievable and one long term goal to build up to in a year.Let your imagination run wild and see what happens, you’d be surprised how far it will take you!

The London Olympics have come to an end. With the sheer amount of events that take place at the Olympics the average american only see’s about 40%-50% of what goes on. Unless you are the select few who watched most of it through your smart phones (Myself included) you missed out on the amazing feats that people were reaching; the sheer amount of weight being lifted in the Olympic lifts, the amazing reaction time of Badminton (Yes I know crazy, but the Birdie actually travels over 200MPH!!). The small things make all the difference when experiencing the Olympics, I myself have always loved watching the Olympics from seeing friends I have grown up competing against now swimming on the biggest stage to the off sports that no one really knows about. (Handball, Badminton, Table Tennis etc.)

But this year the Games did something that put a more lasting impression. They are not avoiding the epidemic facing children today, OBESITY! 1 out of 3 children today are considered overweight or obese, and this years Olympics showed that it doesnt have to stay that way. Companies such as NIKE and Facebook had ads throughout the course of the games showing that you don’t have to be amazing athletic to be great, you only need to take the step to change. My favorite commercial shown below was by far my favorite of them all and it explains so much with very little needing to be said.

Dont be another statistic, it all starts with a goal!
